Beer Observations: January

There are two very cool weekly craft beer events we have available to us here in Bakersfield. Eureka’s weekly steal the glass event on Wednesday’s starting at 6PM has had some really cool glassware featured and some amazing beers. From locals Temblor and Honey Wagon to Boulevard’s Tank 7 to the recent Firestone Walker Nitro Merlin Milk Stout paired with a cookie from Brown Butter Cookie Company, Eureka does a great job of keeping it fresh and bringing a great variety of beers and glassware. The Modern Times Nordic glass they were giving away with City of the Sun was simply stunning.

Another great option that also happens to fall on Wednesdays is over at Moo Creamery. Moo’s Flights and Bites event is from 2-9PM Wednesdays and features a flight of five beers paired with small bites of their always amazing food. Not only does Moo have some of the most innovative food offerings in town but their craft beer line up is consistently second to none. The menu on Wednesday featured some seriously nice pairings from the curry chicken quesadillas paired with a session IPA from Hanger 24 to the stout milk shake and Merlin Milk Stout on nitro pairing the flavors were on point.

So now you have plans for Wednesday all year.

The New Guy

King Harbor Brewing Company has started showing up around town. Wine Me Up! had a tasting that featured a few of their lineup and a logo glass giveaway. They have also been seen in bottles at a couple places around town like Imbibe and Verdugo Market (next to the Apple Jacks). Available in bottles are Abel Brown coffee brown ale, 70 & Sunny dry-hopped saison and the terribly delicious Swirly chocolate/vanilla swirled ale. No word on whether local distribution is permanent or not so go grab some now while it’s available.

Drink Before Valentine’s Day

The current versions of Stone’s Enjoy By – which are best by 2.14.16 – are the wonderfully done Black IPA and my favorite of the series so far, Unfiltered IPA. There is just so much flavor in these beers you really must make a point to try both before they are gone. Also, these two seem to be less boozy then previous Enjoy By iterations.

Construction is currently underway on Lengthwise’s new brewery location and it’s looking to be quite the expansion. The new facility will be 16000 square feet and feature a much larger dining room, expanded capacity brew house and a huge outdoor beer garden. Expect the grand opening this spring.

Belching Beaver

Imbibe’s beer guru Kevin threw us an unexpected curve ball on Wednesday announcing they now carry Belching Beaver. As of now it looks like they will have Hop Highway IPA, Me So Honey Pale Wheat Ale, Dammed! IPA, Horchata Imperial Milk Stout, Beavers Milk Milk Stout and my personal favorite, Peanut Butter Milk Stout all in 22 oz. bottles. Also, they just tapped a keg of Me So Honey.
