Short and Sweet (or Sour)
Episode 2 of the new local home brew podcast Mash Time – A Brewer’s Podcast with hosts Stuart Hoetker and John Agee comes out today. The featured guest is Kevin Hiles, Imbibe’s beer guru talking about how he got into the industry and the latest trends in craft beer. They post a new episode every Sunday. Give them a listen; it’s a great resource for home brewers and craft beer drinkers alike. Follow them on social media and listen on Sound Cloud.
Another local beer blog that I’ve talked about before is The Local Mash written by Craig Zubris who is a recognized B.J.C.P (Beer Judge Certification Program) beer judge and home brewer. His blog focuses on beer reviews and his adventures in fermentation. His latest post is a review of The Brown Note an American brown ale by Against the Grain Brewery out of Louisville KY, available at Imbibe Wine and Spirits. This is a beer I was able to try as well and his tasting notes were spot on. Zubris writes, “its medium body is supported with an overall lightly roasted profile and just enough malt sweetness to carry into the finish that requires a follow up sip”. He rates it 3.5/5. Head on over and subscribe for updates.
The votes are in and Honey Wagon Brewing won by a landslide. Moo Creamery held a blind side by side tasting of Honey Wagon’s Danky Rye Nelson IPA and Alpine Beer Company’s Nelson IPA last week. The people have spoken and leaned heavily in favor of Honey Wagon’s Nelson, 31 to 11. Congrats Honey Wagon for putting out yet another great IPA.
A couple new sours are available over at Imbibe; on tap is Firestone Walker Barrel Works Bretta Weisse which is a German style sour and available in bottles from Mammoth Brewing Company is Forest Nymph, a sour brewed with foraged rose hips.
Savemart has fresh bottles of Kern River Brewing Company’s Just Outstanding bottled on the 20th of July.
Local restaurateur Shawna Haddad who owns Muertos Kitchen and Lounge and is a consultant for CraSh Lounge has launched a new bottle menu at both locations with a focus on IPAs. Both downtown spots are known for their super chill, rich with character atmospheres. Muertos has some of the best food in town and is one of my favorite places to start off a Saturday night. Some of the beers on their bottle list are: Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, Angel City IPA, Coronado Island Brewing Stingray IPA, Strand Brewing White Sand Imperial IPA, Mother Earth Sweet Spot IPA, Shmaltz Brewing Company Bittersweet Lenny’s RIPA, Shmaltz Messiah Brown Nut Ale and a few more from the Shmaltz line. They also plan to have a few seasonal sours available among other beers.
Dionysus Brewing Company continues its Sour Sunday’s where you can fill growlers of most of their sour beers (the rest of the week, only non-sour beers are eligible for growler fills unless you are a society member). A couple notable beers on tap are: Rest In Funk sour wheat, Session Street IPA, Reflexion #1 Berliner Weisse and Strawberries ‘N Cream cream ale. They also have gift cards available for purchase.
In not beer news, the new Lengthwise brewery location at 7700 District Blvd. just raised a massive 20’ x 30’ Old Glory over the beer garden. Yet another reason to go visit the beautiful new brewery.
This week's steal the glass at Eureka Burger.
I’m sure there is plenty more to talk about that I missed. Comment below or send me a message if you have something that needs to be included next week or have a beer related event you want to promote.
