Craft Tap House: So Many Choices

Craft Tap House

Beer geek heaven! The rest of you will enjoy it too.

Craft Tap House opened up on Friday offering Bakersfield a great way to try new beers and enjoy their favorites in a cool atmosphere with a state of the art self-pour system that gives you so many options it’s almost overwhelming, in a good way. The beautifully done minimalist décor is accented by stained concrete, straight lines, exposed duct work and lots of metal giving it a clean industrial feel. The perfect place to try a couple ounces of that new barrel aged stout you’ve seen at your favorite bottle shop or grab a pint of your favorite session beer after work.

Decisions

Other than the beer, the star of Craft Tap House is the pour system. Once you enter the pub, the first thing you’ll want to do is head to the cash registers to get a card and load it up with money. Once you have your card and preferred glassware (5oz., 12oz., 16oz. or 22oz.) the fun starts. To help you navigate the massive tap list you should download the free TapHunter app. With TapHunter you can view all the beers currently on tap at Craft Tap House, see the per ounce price, read a brief description, get more info on the brewery and type of beer, rate the beer and more. Although Craft Tap House is the first local establishment to use the TapHunter system, you can find it in use at many other bars and restaurants in cities like San Diego. If you still have a Razor flip phone or use a Jitterbug and can’t download the app you can get a print out of the tap list at the register. Once you decide what to try check the monitors above the taps to find your beers number and head to the tap. When you put your card in the holder on the tap screen it shows you your balance and how many ounces you’ve poured.

The Beer

The focus will be on rotation and catering to market trends. You won’t see the same beers tapped over and over again. Craft Tap House plans to use multiple distributors to bring in a wide variety of beers. Jeff Hentges, the beer buyer, brings experience buying for pubs and restaurants on the central cost. In addition to the 50 beers on tap, they will always have a handful of beers ready to go on when a tap opens up. So don’t expect to see any lonely empty taps. The opening tap list features a nice selection of beers that aren’t easily found elsewhere in town. I’m especially excited to see their selection of taps on Nitro (currently four) which may increase depending on demand.

The Food

Good beer and good food go hand in hand. The kitchen, ran by head chef Thomas Chairez, is serving up a diverse menu with some very interesting twists and a sophisticated spin on pub food. From artesian flat breads to stout braised short ribs to a Hawaiian poke stack the variety will give you a reason other than the beer to come back. A pub menu wouldn’t be complete without bratwurst so naturally Craft Tap House has a selection of sausages and brats made by local butcher shop Prime Cuts. Other items include; multiple versions of burgers, sandwiches, salads and a complete list of appetizers.

Craft Tap House adds a great new venue with a high tech feel to our growing local craft beer scene that presents another option to facilitate your craving for something new. It’s oddly satisfying to control how much or how little you put in your glass. Not to mention, with this system, you’ll never be stuck with a pint of something you don’t like. My advice is to always start with the 5oz. taster glass, experiment with beer types and brands you haven’t tried and enjoy the experience of trying something new.
