Do You Even Brew?
Last Tuesday was the second home brewers meeting at Temblor Brewing Company. If you’re a home brewer or simply interested in brewing at home you need to fit this into your schedule. It happens the third Tuesday of every month at Temblor. Everyone at the meeting is friendly and open for conversation. Bring your home brew and get real, honest feedback and discuss ways to improve your brewing process in an informal format that consists of drinking and discussing home brewing. I had the opportunity to attend this past meeting and it was a relaxed, laid back atmosphere and super informative. The topic addressed was off flavors in beer presented by local home brewer and co-host of Mash Time – A Brewing Podcast, John Agee. Presented in PowerPoint format (although we just went with the less environmentally friendly version of printed handouts), John walked us through a myriad of hard to pronounce naturally occurring compounds that cause off flavors. In true oil field fashion it started with a faux safety moment before getting into the who, what, where, and why of the topic. After going over the many off flavors and causes we got back to socializing and tasting home brews. I highly recommend going to the March meeting on the 21st. They plan to expand on the off flavor topic by actually tasting what it does to beer. Temblor is providing an off-flavor kit to use so everyone can experience and become more knowledgeable about what to look for and how to prevent it from happening. I hope to see a bunch of new faces at this next meeting.
Short and Sweet (or Sour)
Modern Times recently announced their March 16 oz. can special release. Effective Dreams IPA is a collaboration brew with Great Notion Brewing out of Portland, OR. This “hazy, juicy bundle of awesomeness” will be hitting Brown Paper Tickets sometime this coming month. Watch social media for more details on this release.
Luponic Distortion Rev. 005 is now available at Sandrini’s Public House and should be showing up other places around town this week. This revolution of Firestone Walker’s Revolving Hop Series has an assertive tropical fruit character with most of the hops coming from the Yakima valley in Washington.
Long Swim DIPA is on tap at the brewery up at Kern River Brewing Company. This local favorite has also been bottled and should start showing up in town soon in 22 oz. bottles. Citra DIPA is still on tap at the brewery but not for long. Bottles of Citra are available for purchase at the brewery for $9, no limit. Not many cases of those left, though. Igor Unchained Russian Imperial Stout is set for bottling and kegging around the 5th. A portion of Igor was put into Rum barrels for aging. There are two new IPAs in tanks expected to be kegged late this week: Wave Train IPA is 7.5% ABV with Chinook, Amarillo, and El Dorado hops, and Bombogenesis IPA is 7% ABV with apricots, coconut, and pineapples. These will be kegs only.
Lengthwise Brewing Company will have 22 oz. bottles of White IPA, Rye IPA, and Irish Red Ale this week. Next up for bottles is the West Coast Brown Ale. The Irish Red Ale will be on tap at the brewery on Friday 3/3. Here’s brewer, Kyle Smith describing the profile of that beer: “Irish Red Ale is a 5.2% ABV Amber Ale brewed with caramel and roasted malts. This Irish Red is true to style with a little biscuit malt profile and brewed using a traditional Irish yeast strain.”
It’s hard to believe it’s only been one year but time fly’s when your drinking good beer. Dionysus Brewing Company announced their One Year Anniversary party is scheduled for April 1st starting at noon. To celebrate Dionysus will be releasing Peach On Through, a golden sour aged in French Oak barrels with peaches, cinnamon, and vanilla beans. The amazing logo for this beer was done by illustrator and graphic designer, Parker Jones. This bottle release and the party will be open to the public. Expect more info for this event in the coming weeks.
Following this Friday’s Snobs IPA bottle release at Imbibe, Local Craft Beer Tehachapi has T-shirts coming soon with the Snobs logo. Next up at the brewery are two New England style IPAs; The Haze is Real DIPA and The Juice is Real DIPA both should be available on tap late March. Speaking of March, Local Craft Beer Tehachapi will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party with a free show by Whiskey Galore on the 17th. I’ll have more on this when we get closer but if you haven’t been to a Whiskey Galore show, it’s a must see.
