Short and Sweet (or Sour)
The Bakersfield Californian always ends the year with a full slate of retrospective articles for a look back at the year coming to a close. Best of lists, notable quotes and other such reminiscent topics will start showing up in the paper on the 17th. James Burger’s Beer Drinker’s Guide to Bakersfield will, I’m sure, be a great read and appropriate subject matter for those that read this blog. James Burger is a local reporter for the Californian, home brewer and craft beer enthusiast who was recently featured on Mash Time – A Brewing Podcast.
As I posted last week, Lengthwise has two new beers coming online this Friday the 9th. I spoke with brewer, Kyle Smith to get a little more info on these new additions. The Rye IPA will weigh in at 7% ABV with an IBU count of 65 and a grain bill consisting of 2-Row barley, Malted rye, Dextrin Malt and a touch of Carmel 30L (for color). Citra hops will be added in the whirlpool for aroma with Simcoe, Cascade and Amarillo dry hopped. The Restoration Ale will have 45 IBU’s and a 5.2% ABV with 2-Row barley, Carmel 10L and Dextrin Malt in the grain bill. New Zealand hops shine brightly in this beer with a heavy dose of Galaxy and Dr. Rudi.
Xocoveza is here! Finally. This beer illustrates wonderfully the “Fly Over” status Bakersfield enjoys (sarcasm) in the craft beer distribution game. We are, sometimes, the forgotten market and get dropped to the lower half of the priority list too often. Stone Brewing’s Xocoveza Winter Spiced Mocha Stout is a seriously delicious, perfectly timed seasonal beer that was released this year on October 3rd. Here we are two months later getting it in Bakersfield. As the old saying goes: Beggars can’t be choosers. Make sure to pick up your six pack of this wonderful beer before it’s gone. It’s available locally at Imbibe Wine and Spirits, Save Mart, Verdugo Market and probably all the other better beer sellers around town.
Moo Creamery has a bunch of good stuff on tap right now. Look for Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, Modern Times Roots of Coincidence, North Coast Barrel Aged Old Rasputin, Maine Brewing Peeper Pale Ale, Tioga Sequoia Double Dry Hopped General Sherman on Nitro, Tioga Sequoia Fulton Street IPA, Track Seven Suckahop IPA, Sierra Nevada Trip in the Woods Barrel Aged Narwhal with Currants and Sierra Nevada Trip in the Woods Barrel Aged Bigfoot Ale with Ginger as well as others.
Currently available at local bottle shops such as Save Mart, Imbibe Wine and Spirts and GM Liquor: Stone Xocoveza Charred Mocha Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels, Founders Lizard of Koz Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels featuring blueberries, vanilla and chocolate, Stone Enjoy By 12.25.16 unfiltered IPA, Drakes Aroma Therapy Triple IPA and Drakes Electric Owl Coffee Brown.
Another collaboration brew coming soon is bringing three local favorites together. Dionysus and Local Craft Beer will be joining up to brew a Gose in December. One of the main ingredients in a Gose is salt and what better place to get your salt than Walter Salt the local company that infuses salt with craft beer. For this project, Walter is making a salt using Dionysus Super Funkadelic. That salt will be used in the Gose recipe. They will be brewing a batch at Dio and up in Tehachapi at LCB.
Lengthwise has their Coffee Stout in bombers at the district location. The supply is limited but they will have more coming in the future.
I’m sure there is plenty more to talk about that I missed. Comment below or send me a message if you have something that needs to be included next week or have a beer related event you want to promote.
