Catching up with our local breweries.

Kern River Brewing Company has fresh cans of River Buddy Pale Ale on shelves now and is expected to have Isabella Blonde in cans on local shelves sometime this week. New on draft at the brewery are: California Lounge Chair West Coast Pale Ale brewed with Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe coming in at 6.7%, Brown Claw Brown Ale, a small batch brew made up of roasted specialty malts & toasted grain to give a nutty, balanced chocolate taste at 5% ABV, and Fishin’ in the Dark Imperial Coffee Porter made with San Diego’s Bird Rock Coffee Roaster’s 75% Columbian & 25% Organic Sumatra coffee bean blend, cocoa nibs, molasses, and toasty malts with a big 9.5% ABV. KRBC’s next beer pairing dinner is coming up on Tuesday, September 12th at 6 PM. These dinners are always great and well worth the drive up the canyon. The First Annual Rockin River Beer and Music Festival is Saturday, October 21st in Kernville at Rivernook Campground. Benefiting local non-profit, Keepers of the Kern, the festival has a respectable initial line up of breweries including all of our locals, some representation from the surrounding counties, and a few that aren’t common at our local festivals such as Arrow Lodge Brewing, Bitter Brothers Brewing, Three Weavers, and more. They are still announcing breweries so expect more surprises. The event is scheduled from 1 – 5 pm with VIP getting in an hour early and will have music from Lonely Avenue, Weedpatch Carnival, Stoneflys, and The Usual Haunts. Tickets go on sale August 1st on Eventbrite. $25DD/$55GA/$75VIP

The Fourth Annual Bakersfield Bacon and Craft Beer Festival returns on Saturday, November 11th from 1 PM – 5 PM (VIP get in at noon) at The Park at Riverwalk. This locally ran festival that features two of life’s greatest pleasures, Bacon and Craft Beer, benefits local children’s charities such as The Bakersfield Police Activities League, Covenant Community Services, KT Riders, and a dozen others. Local vendors such as Moo Creamery, Lengthwise (usually a whole hog), Michaelangelo’s, Cold Stone Creamery, BJ’s Brewhouse, Locale Farm to Table Eatery, and many others will be offering up unlimited samples of their bacon creations. Over 40 breweries will be featured, each serving three different brews. The brewery list is still being updated but expect to see our local breweries, as well as others from nearby such as Tioga-Sequoia, Firestone Walker, Kinetic, Bravery, Belching Beaver, Modern Times, and much more. Watch for updates as we get closer to the event. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite. Prices go up as we get closer to the event so the sooner you pull the trigger the better. $50 (8/13-9/10), $55 (9/11-10/22), $60 (10/23-11/10), and $70 day of the event

Beer For Your Ears

Podcasts are the future of entertainment (said someone in 2004).

Mash Time – A Brewing Podcast – A local station for discussing home brewing and craft beer, hosted by Stuart Hoetker and John Agee out of Bakersfield CA. Episode 21 is an intimate after brew day discussion with John and Kenny from IPA Today.

IPA Today Podcast – A local podcast critiquing beers and wasting time. Hosted by Kenny and Richie with frequent appearances by Uncle Frank and Joey. Episode 55 features powerlifter and electrician Steve drinking with the guys.

I’m Not Kevin Podcast – A podcast with a focus on stories and random talk with friends and family hosted by Shawn, an average guy from California. They usually drink beer and occasionally talk about beer. Check them out and give a listen. Episode 22 is a recorded live broadcast with IPA Today at Local Craft Beer Tehachapi! With Richie currently on tour with Beyoncé as a backup dancer and keyboardist, Joey steps in to co-host. Shawn, Kenny, and Joey are joined by me and some special guests from the brewery for a great time and a little bit of beer talk.

The Perfect Pour Podcast – Check out this Fresno based craft beer podcast that recently hit 200 episodes. Hosted by Nick, Matt, and Mikey with bumper music by Sunburns, their content certainly has a Fresno focus but there’s lots of relevant beer talk, beer tasting, beer news, listener voicemails, and the occasional beer celebrity guest. It’s a well-executed, organized podcast that is entertaining and informative. Episode 215 features special guest Evilcirkle as they explore what constitutes a “square” in the craft beer world.

Up for you to win are a bottle of Dionysus Brewing Berlinersfield with Guava, a can of Monkish Brewing Think About it Pilsner, and a pair of sunglasses from Cheers Sunglasses.
